‘Naked England madness! Cheated at Wembley again!’ How Germany’s biggest tabloid saw the game VERY differently, calling the Lionesses NASTY, whingeing about 1966 and shock at Chloe Kelly’s goal celebration

  • England beat Germany in extra time to win the Women’s Euros at Wembley
  • Chole Kelly scored in 110th minute to bring football home for first time since ’66
  • German press not happy, saying there should have been a penalty for handball
  • ‘Cheated at Wembley again’ was how biggest tabloid Bild summed up the night, recalling Hurst’s goal in the World Cup

Heartbreak, frustration, and the same old excuses. Exactly what you’d expect from England after a major football final against Germany went to extra time.

Except this time it isn’t us – it’s them.

England won. The Lionesses brought football home at last, clinching our first major international trophy since 1966. And it is the Germans who have been left to reflect on what could have been.

‘Cheated at Wembley again!’ is how the country’s largest tabloid, Bild, summed up a night of broken dreams at Wembley, harkening back to Hurst’s infamous goal 56 years ago that helped England to a 4-2 World Cup final win.

The newspaper complained the ‘nasty’ Lionesses had rammed their goalie against the post, ‘cheated’ in the 26th minute when an alleged handball was waved off on VAR review, and then ‘laughed’ when a shot struck the post in the second half.

‘Naked madness’ is how they reacted to Chloe Kelly’s iconic celebration when, deep into extra time, she poked home a corner to send England into meltdown and write her name and those of her teammates into the history books.

Minute by minute, this is how expectation and enthusiasm turned to excuses and incredulity as – for once – England beat Germany to bring home a trophy…

'Now get a title. Wembley madness! Here we go': Germany are full of confidence going into the game as their team have never lost a Euros final, and have never been beaten by England in England before Sunday night
