Chennai Super Kings needed a few big hits in the final over of Match 19 of IPL 2021 after having lost momentum during the middle overs against Royal Challengers Bangalore. They were 154 for 4 at the end of the 19th over but a big-hitting carnage from Ravindra Jadeja helped CSK post an above-par total of 191 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.

Harshal Patel, the Purple Cap holder, leaked as many 37 runs in the final over, the joint-highest number of runs conceded in one over in the history of the IPL. Harshal had conceded only 14 runs in 3 overs, picking up 3 wickets before Virat Kohli entrusted him with the responsibility of bowling the final over. Harshal had been spending at death but it was not his day on Sunday as Jadeja launched into him, hitting as many as 5 sixes and a boundary.

Harhsal equalled an unwanted record set by former Kochi Tuskers Kerala pacer Prashanth Parameswaran by conceding 37 runs in the final over.

On the other hand, Jadeja became the first Chennai Super Kings player to pick up 3 wickets and a hit a fifty-plus score in the same IPL match. It is also only the 13th instance of a player doing so as the all-rounder left opposition captain Virat Kohli impressed.

Jadeja did not just stop there as he went on to pick up 3 wickets in a match-winning spell of 3/13. He removed Bangalore’s big boys, Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers as the former finalists were restricted to 122 for 9 in 20 overs. Jadeja also ran Dan Christian out with a direct hit, adding salt to the wounds of the Australia all-rounder who had dropped the CSK star on 0 earlier in the day.

Speaking after CSK’s emphatic victory, Jadeja revealed how MS Dhoni helped him line up Harshal Patel in the final over of their innings.

“I was just looking to hit it hard. Mahi bhai told me he would bowl somewhere outside off and luckily I connected,” he said.
