Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni was delighted with Ravindra Jadeja’s all-round effort, especially his big-hitting display in their 69-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in Match 19 of IPL 2021 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

MS Dhoni acknowledged that Ravindra Jadeja’s batting has undergone a significant change for good in the last few years and that gives him the option of giving his premier all-rounder a few more overs in the middle. Jadeja showcased his class with the bat, hitting 62 not out in just 28 balls against RCB. He smashed 5 sixes and a boundary in the final over bowled by Harshal Patel as CSK picked up 37 runs to post 191 for 4 on the board.

Jadeja was impossible to bowl at as he connected everything he swung at, equalling Chris Gayle’s record for the most runs scored in an over in the IPL. Jadeja finished with 5 sixes and 4 boundaries as CSK went from 154 to 191 in a span of 6 balls. Jadeja also equalled the record for most sixes hit by a batsman in an over in the IPL.

“Jaddu is somebody who can change the game on his own. In the last few years we’ve seen significant change in batting and it’s worth it to give him that extra bit of time, extra deliveries. The bowlers have found it difficult to contain left-handers, and that helps as well,” Dhoni said after CSK’s big win over RCB.

“It’s a good wicket but I felt the spinners had something up their sleeves and I felt that extra few runs Jadeja made helped. 165 would have been par, and once you get 25 extra the opposition has to come a little harder,” he added.

With the emphatic win, CSK not just halted RCB’s 4-match winning streak but also jumped back to the top spot of the IPL 2021 points table. With 4 wins from 5 matches in the Mumbai leg of the tournament, CSK are showing signs of return to peak form after a disappointing season in 2020 wherein they failed to quality for the play-offs for the first time in their history.

When asked what CSK are doing different this year, MS Dhoni said the 3-time champions have been just focussing on the process and winning the respect of the opposition by performing under pressure.

“We’re not doing anything drastically different from what we did last year. Me and Fleming, we keep saying that we focus on the process. You gain more respect if you keep following your path when you’re under pressure. I think that is something that gave a lot of confidence to the players. Credit to the players. Everybody would have felt the pressure in the first game because it was a lean season,” Dhoni added.

MS Dhoni’s men will next face Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium as they head to Delhi for the next leg of their campaign in IPL 2021.
