Horror as 20 dead and 68 injured in head-on crash between tour bus and van in South Africa

As many as 20 people have been killed and 68 have been injured following a head-on collision between a tour bus and a cash-carrying van.

The collision happened on the N1 motorway in the Makhado area of Limpopo in South Africa at around 8pm last night (6pm UK time).

Following the crash, the bus rolled from the freeway bridge into the river below, landing on its left side.

Private ambulance service ER24 sent paramedics the scene at 8:05pm along with the Fire Department, Provincial EMS and Rescue and several other private EMS services.

The scene was still active at around midnight (10pm UK time), the ER24 emergency blog reports.

ER24 said that several passengers still possibly unaccounted for, as 20 people were confirmed dead in the crash.

One patient, of the 69 passengers confirmed transported to hospital for multiple injuries, has since died.

Three people were found deceased by the roadside and a further 16 were found dead down by the river.

Most of the people found dead by the river had been trapped under the bus.

ER24 said that the exact details surrounding the collision are ‘unknown at this time’, however South African Police Service attended the scene to investigate.

The ambulance service said that heavy rain had been falling in the area before the incident.

ER24 spokesperson Ross Cambell said: ‘Three people were found deceased by the roadside and sixteen down by the river.’

‘All were declared dead on arrival. Most of the fatalities down by the rover had been trapped under the bus,’ he said, adding that one person had died after being transported to hospital.
