Delhi Capitals star Steve Smith on Sunday lauded Kane Williamson, saying the Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman came up with a ‘smart’ knock in chase of 160 against them in Match 20 of IPL 2021 on Sunday. Smith said the Capitals were fortunate to get the job done by winning the season’s first Super Over despite a batting masterclass from the New Zealand captain.
Steve Smith, who chipped in with a crucial 25-ball 34 that propelled Delhi Capitals to 159/4 in 20 overs, acknowledged that Kane Williamson gave Sunrisers Hyderabad a chance by taking the match deep into the final over. Notably, Williamson hit a 51-ball 66 not out as he single-handed took the former champions closer to the finish line.
With 16 needed in the final over, Williamson found support from Jagadeesha Suchith as the duo scored 15 runs against Kagiso Rabada, leading to the first Super Over of IPL 2021 season.
Williamson partnered with David Warner in the Super Over and hit a boundary. However, Sunrisers managed just 7 runs after David Warner was found one-shiort in the final delivery of the brilliant over bowled by Axar Patel. Shikhar Dhawan and captain Rishabh Pant walked out to chase and got the job done in the final ball of the Super Over.
“This wicket’s been pretty difficult to score as well. I probably tried to over-hit the ball today rather than just timing it and using the middle of the bat a bit more. We have seen on this wicket, guys who have tried to muscle the ball and over haven’t done quite as well. Just fortunate to get over the line in the end. Kane played a smart innings to get deep and gave them a chance. Fortunately, we are on the right side of it tonight,” Smith said.
Steve Smith on easing into Delhi Capitals environment
Smith was released by Rajasthan Royals after they finished with the wooden spoon in IPL 2020. He was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs 2.2 crore, fending off a bid from Royal Challengers Bangalore at the IPL 2021 auction in February.
Smith has played only 3 out of Delhi Capials’ first 5 matches but the Australia batsman has chipped in with two crucial knocks already.
Speaking about his camaraderie with new teammates and head coach Ricky Ponting, Smith added: ” I fit in really well with this crew. They are a good bunch of guys. We are playing some good cricket as well, nice to get over the line and in the nail-biter tonight.
“I have worked with Ricky a little, he was my captain when I first started playing international cricket, so I know him well. He’s done some really good things with this franchise. He is very calm, he brings great energy to the group. It’s been a good first couple of weeks,” Smith added.
Delhi Capitals moved to the 2nd spot of the IPL 2021 points table with their 4th win of the season. Chennai Super Kings, who hammered Royal Challengers Bangalore by 69 runs on Sunday, are at the top spot.
