Sunrisers Hyderabad star opener Jonny Bairstow was visibly elated after starring in his team’s first win of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 over Punjab Kings on Wednesday in Chennai. Notably, Bairstow smashed an unbeaten fifty as SRH snapped their three-match losing streak with a comprehensive 9-wicket win over PBKS at the Wankhede Stadium.

Bairstow acknowledged that SRH had been unsuccessful in chasing small targets three successive times due to their carelessness but he was pleased and over the moon as Hyderabad romped home with 8 balls to spare on Wednesday.

“Absolutely over the moon to get us over the line. Been really close in most of the games, and haven’t got through. Probably through carelessness to be honest. Pleased to get over the line,” Jonny Bairstow said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

“Each game we’ve seen after the powerplay it’s gotten harder and harder. It was key to make sure we took advantage (of the powerplay). I don’t really need to talk about how good Kane is. That one Moises dropped at covers, to time it like that and not get four,” Bairstow added.

Asked to bowl first, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s pace-spin duo of Khaleel (3/21) and Abhishek Sharma (2/24) did the bulk of the damage to restrict Punjab Kings for a below-par 120 in 19.4 overs. Chasing the total, SRH openers Jonny Bairstow (63) and David Warner (37) pummelled Punjab into submission, adding 73 runs off 60 balls to set the foundation.

Bairstow found an able ally in Williamson after Warner’s exit s the star duo added an unbeaten 48 runs to help SRH log their first win of the season. This was only the third occasion when a team managed to successfully chase down a target out of 8 matches at the Chepauk in IPL 2021.
