Former England captain Kevin Pietersen came down hard on Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Chris Morris who failed to fire once again for the team during their 10-wicket loss against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Match 16 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.
Morris, who became the most expensive buy in the IPL auction in February this year, scored just 10 runs off 7 balls and conceded 38 runs from his 3 overs as RR succumbed to their second successive loss in IPL 2021 on Thursday after being completely outplayed by Virat Kohli’s RCB at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Much was expected off Morris when he came to bat with RR in trouble at 133 for 6 in the 16th over but couldn’t do much even when his team needed acceleration in the death overs. The South African all-rounder was then taken to the cleaners by RCB openers Devdutt Padikkal and Virat Kohli, who chased down the target without losing their wickets and with 21 balls to spare.
Pietersen singled out Morris’s performance even though none of the RR players could live up to expectations. But then, RR did not have to pay a record price of Rs 16.25 for any other player in the team apart from the South African all-rounder.
“This is going to sound harsh, but he went for a lot more money than I would have ever paid for, to be completely honest. I just don’t think that he’s worth that kind of number. I think there’s pressure on him,” said Pietersen on Star Sports Live Feed Select Dugout
MORRIS NOT WORTH THE PRICE TAG?
Pietersen went on to add that it would be wrong to expect Morris to deliver in every match as he doesn’t have the special abilities to win games on a consistent basis for RR.
“He’s not a first choice for the South African side. So, I think we’re expecting too much. There’s too much talked about him. I don’t think he’s the kind of guy that’s going to consistently deliver. I mean this with the greatest deal of respect,” he further said.
“There’s nothing special about what he does, and if he does run-in, he’ll run-in for two games. And then he’ll go missing for a few games and it’s not the kind of thing that you should be seeing. He has the attributes,” Pietersen added.
Morris hasn’t been able to live up to his price tag in the IPL this season but he did manage to play a key role in the only match that RR has won so far this season. He smashed 36 not out in RR’s successful run chase against Delhi Capitals in Match 7 to be adjudged Player of the Match.
The Royals are currently languishing in last place on the points table and will next face the Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 18 of IPL 2021 at the same venue on April 24.
