Two Russian pupils ‘fainted’ as they were shown new school desks decorated with pictures and details on fighters killed in Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine, according to local media.

Others students refused to sit at the ‘macabre’ desks at the school in Irkutsk, Russia, which display pictures of dead national guardsmen.

A teacher said: ‘They were shocked by the crying relatives and fainted,’ a teacher said.

A pupil added: ‘It’s the same as learning on a gravestone.’ Another source said: ‘They think the desks are macabre.’

Putin’s regime is seeking to propagandise the war in school and the desk tributes to fighters is part of this campaign.

Pupils are also expected to undergo military training and sing patriotic songs.

Teacher Alexei Volk, in charge of cadet classes at the school, admitted that the sight of the desks had been too much for some pupils. But he said most saw it as ‘an honour to sit at such desks’.

National guards Akhmed Magomedov, Igor Meklyaev and Ivan Maksimov were among those immortalised on the school desks.
