Emergency services rushed to the scene and evacuated passengers from the two trains within half an hour.

Initial reports suggest that one train was travelling at speed and crashed into another stationary convoy that had stopped at the platform in Montcada i Reixac.

One passenger told the Ser Catalunya outlet that she had experienced a ‘tremendous blow’ at the moment of impact and said that ‘people were screaming’.

Another passenger told local radio station RAC1 that the ‘train was full and my carriage, which was the last one, was completely full’ at the time of the collision.

‘There was a collision between two trains at 7:50 am at the Montcada i Reixac-Manresa station, on the line heading to Barcelona, that’s to say one train ran into the back of another,’ a spokesman for the state rail operator said.

Ester Capella, the Catalan government’s representative in Madrid, told Spanish National Radio that officials are investigating the incident.

A spokeswoman for the SEM regional emergency services said: ‘There were 155 people affected of which 150 were lightly injured and five who were moderately hurt.’

She said 18 medical units had been deployed to the area, which is located six miles north of Barcelona.

Rail traffic along the line was suspended in both directions and Renfe had opened an investigation into what happened, spokesman for the state rail operator said.
